Anyone interested in registering and maintaining a “.BR” domain must come to the Brazilian domain Registry, which is coordinated by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee – CGI.br. The revenue from these registries, besides ensuring the quality of the service provided, is invested in several projects implemented by the NIC.br - Brazilian Network Information Center, which is a non-profit civil entity, created for the purpose of being the executive arm of the CGI.br. The NIC.br is responsible for:

Domain name registry

Registro.br

Since 1995, o Registro.br Registro.br has handled domain name registration, the administration and publication of the DNS (Domain Name System) for the “.br” domain, as well as the Internet address distribution and maintenance services.

In order to achieve that, Registro.br has a team of highly qualified professionals who are constantly analyzing and developing new tools to perfect the Brazilian domain name registry system and maintain its leading technological position in this field.

An example of this is the DNSSEC project, which is an international standard that broadens the scope of DNS technology. The DNSSEC adds a more secure name resolution system, reducing the risk of information and data being manipulated.

The Brazilian registry also operates and maintains the database services provided by LACNIC. NIC.br and LACNIC signed a cooperation agreement, by which IPv4, IPv6 addresses and ASNs for Brazil are administered by NIC.br, while LACNIC functions as the regional Internet address registry for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Infrastructure for the Brazilian Internet

CEPTRO.br

CEPTRO.br - The Center of Studies and Research on Network Technologies and Operations – is responsible for enhancing the Brazilian Internet and disseminating its use, focusing especially on its technical and infrastructural aspects. Learn more about its main activities:

Creating a more reliable, faster and cheaper Internet:

PTT.brThe PTT.br, The PTT.br collaborates to improve the quality and reduce the cost of Internet access, helping to organize its structure as well. An IXP (Internet eXchange Point – PTT in Portuguese) may be defined as a network solution aimed at enabling direct connection between the entities that make up the Internet, which are the Autonomous Systems (AS). The PTTMetro Project was created in 2004 by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee in order to enable distributed and independent creation of IXPs in different regions, whose purpose is to maintain local traffic within its region of origin. The following locations are in operation: Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Campinas, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Londrina, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo. The PTTMetro project is still growing, promoting the improvement of the services provided, and creating new IXPs in the locations where they are needed.

Measuring the quality of the Internet:

SIMETBy using the Simet , Simet software, besides measuring the quality of the last mile, you will also be contributing with information that will be used to improve the quality of the services provided by your Internet access provider. Simet does more than just measuring speed, jitter, delays and losses: it informs your provider, as soon as it has sufficient data, about the quality of the service provided in each region, enabling it to act towards enhancing its network.

Dedicated devices are measuring the quality of the Brazilian broadband from voluntary households. This is a joint effort of the CGI.br, through NIC.br, together with Inmetro and Anatel, relying on the support of the RNP as well.

The Map of the quality of the Internet in Brazil (www.ceptro.br/mapa) enables the performance of Brazilian networks to be monitored when communicating with other networks worldwide. In order to accomplish this, devices from the RIPE TTM project (www.ripe.net/ttm) were installed by the main Internet providers in Brazil.

Ensuring network continuity and development:

IPv6.brThe IPv6.br, IPv6.br comprises a series of initiatives aimed at disseminating the new IPv6 Internet protocol, in Brazil. Besides a website with news and information about the protocol, the Project provides an e-learning course, which features a workshop on Autonomous Systems, lectures in several events and free IPv6 traffic for PTT.br participants in São Paulo. Using the IPv6 is essential to ensure the continued growth of the Internet.

Other actions:

NTP.brThe NTP.br freely distributes the correct time, provided by the National Observatory, via the Internet, through the a, b and c.ntp.br servers. The website also contains information on how the system works and the configuration necessary to use it.

A route collector from the RIS - Routing Information Service project is maintained, in partnership with RIPE, at the PTT.br in São Paulo. It consists of a service available for Autonomous Systems which helps to solve network routing problems.

CEPTRO.br also develops projects to increase the use of voice-over-IP and IP telephony, disseminate multimedia content in Portuguese on the Internet and promote studies on the Brazilian Web, among other things.

Indicators and statistics

CETIC.br

The Center of Studies on Information and Communication Technologies - CETIC.br - is responsible for the production of indicators and statistics on the availability and use of the Internet in Brazil, periodically publishing analyses and information on the development of the network in the country. This information is essential in order to monitor and evaluate the socio-economic impact of ICTs, provide guidance for the design of public policies aimed at ensuring access to the network, as well as enable comparisons between the Brazilian reality and the reality of other countries.

In partnership with several renowned research institutes, CETIC.br annually coordinates and "Survey on the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Brazil – ICT HOUSEHOLDS and ICT ENTERPRISES". This is a process that undergoes constant improvement and is carried out in collaboration with the Observatory for the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean (OSILAC) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), in accordance with the methodology set forth by the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development, an international initiative aimed at improving the quality and availability of data and indicators on the development of the Information Society worldwide.

The surveys on the use of technologies contribute toward the promotion of discussions on the subject and create the necessary conditions for the public sector to design its electronic government and digital inclusion programs, as well as policies to increase broadband use across the country. These indicators are important for private companies to plan their business and evaluate the trends regarding the development of the Internet, which is the backbone of a globalized economy. This is an important contribution of the CGI.br to society and to the government, as it provides the adequate information to promote e-services and e-business in the country.

PDF versions of these surveys are available in Portuguese and English at www.cetic.br
